He hopes John will find the situation at Gibraltar comfortable if not lucrative; his sister is in great health and beauty, a favourite with everyone she meets; his cousin William Pulteney Alison has just recovered from a smart fever caught at work as a physician in a dispensary; all the other Alisons are well as are his 'wife and brats'; melon seeds arrived safely from Malta and he asks for more.
The letter includes addenda in the hand of George Gregory stating William was well in Halifax up to the 18th of December and he is sending the latest accounts to him; All his letters arrived safely up to number 28; James Gregory accepted the office 'in the handsomest manner'; called on Mr Bradshaw; James has not written to him out of sheer idleness; William Pulteney Alison had very bad bout of typhus fever but is now recovering; all is well at Edinburgh and Canterbury; Annetta Cage is staying with the Eggertons but has not had time to see them; John Sayers' wife has presented him with a daughter.
