Date17 July 1885
Extent1 item (2 leaves)
Creator NameSir Francis Galton (1822 - 1911), human geneticist, biostatistician and eugenicist
Administrative HistorySir Francis Galton made a long series of enquiries into heredity and how traits were passed from one generation to another. He made a study of the frequency with which eminent people were related and compared that with the frequency with which eminent people arose within previously undistnguished families.
DescriptionLetter from Sir Francis Galton, 42 Rutland Gate, London, to Sir Philip Spencer Gregory thanking him for the Anderson-Gregory papers. He remarks on the significance of the completeness of the papers as it was important for his work to know about the failures as well as the successes and of the presence or absence of neurotic disease. He remarks that he has not found evidence of neurotic disease in the Gregory family. Another important factor was the date at which ability showed itself. He recommended a set of blank forms entitled "Records of Family Faculties" (MacMillan, 1883) as useful for anyone compiling a family history, 17 July 1885.
