Description | Sir Philip Spencer Gregory, 'Records of the family of Gregory' (London, privately published, 1886): the author's own, interleaved and annotated copy with manuscript appendix containing a list of family records compiled in 1885.
The printed volume contains family trees and biographical sketches of both principal and minor members of the Gregory family, 16th - 19th centuries, together with brief genealogies of their predecessors, the MacGregors of Glenurquhay and the MacGregors of Glenlyon and Roro, and a note on the family's armorial bearings.
The appendix is arranged in six sections: 1. An account of the Anderson Family copied from a document written by James Gregory M.D. in the early 18th century; 2. A description of the Reverend John Gregorie's (1598 - 1652) estates in Aberdeenshire and Banffshire (details extracted from the Records of Special Retours for the counties); 3. Biographical notes on the descendants of female members of the family; 4. A catalogue of documents relating to the family, known to, or in the possession of, Sir Philip Spencer Gregory (this list appears to include most of the records deposited in MS 2206, but also describes many others which are not included in the collection. Some may have been subsequently deposited in Edinburgh University Library); 5. A list of printed and manuscript books [written] by members of the family, noted as being in the possession of Sir Philip Spencer Gregory or Mrs Leith; 6. A list of family portraits, all except one, noted as being in the possession of Mrs Leith (16 portraits are listed, with a note of the artist's name (where known) and any details of provenance). |
