Description | Journal of Jonathan Troup: April 1789
They left Dartmouth on the first of April and 'my sweet Mary's' [Mary Ford] and fired pistol above twenty times. They came upon Madeira on the 15th. He sketched the island from the North East. He described the geography, houses, clothing of natives and cost of goods. He sketched madeira boat. Verse - 'come marine gods, conveyed o'er liquid plains'. They left Madeira on 17 April. He gave 'An account of all the ladies and gentlemen who are to undergo the pleasant and agreeable operation of [shaving] and duching before their majesties, King Neptune and Queen Thetis Amphitrite' and described the ceremony. He sketched the ship the Duchess of Portland as it appeared in Dartmouth harbour after Bay of Biscay storm and appearance of the ship when it lay on the Line of Cancer. He sketched a man's head He gave a description and sketches of flying fish. He gave the lyrics of a song, partly French, partly English |
