They arrived in Dartmouth for refitting at the beginning of February
Troup left for Exeter on the 4th of February and travelled round that part of England until 31 March. He met Eliza Thomas, a country girl ('I gained her heart and never more pleased with anyone'). He visited Plymouth and fell in with a German doctor who claims to be able to unite all the bones in the skeleton when blindfolded.
He also meets 'my dear' Mary Ford in Plymouth. He refers to her frequently throughout the journal.
