They sailed from Portsmouth on 11 January 1789. The seas were wild and stormy. Troup got soaked in his bed by a wave over-topping the ship.
Porpoises swam alongside the boat
The weather was still very stormy - foremast carried off and then later the main top mast.
The ship was examined - bow sprit split and main mast sprung at top.
They stayed in Bay of Biscay thinking to go to Lisbon to refit but contrary winds so returned to England.
