| Description | Letter, marked 'Private', from Duke of Atholl, Dunkeld (Perthshire) to Rt. Hon. Henry Dundas. Recommends Mr. Charles Hope for post of Attorney General in Isle of Man and asks Dundas to forward name to Duke of Portland. The present holder of the office is incapacitated and has not visited the island for 22 years. He also recommends the appointment of Major Small in place of Shaw as Lieutenant Governor, who is extremely incompetent and should be retired immediately. The present attorney general should be pensioned off and new attorney general should spend 2 months every year in the Isle of Man and depute routine work.
[Major Small is probably the Charles Small who was in the office of ordnance in the Isle of Man at one time and is referred to in Chronicles of the Atholl and Tullibardine Families iv. 154]. |
