The first letter, dated 29 April 1872, congratulates Northbrook on his appointment to the Government of India and welcomes him to the country. In other correspondence he refers to instances of crimes committed by soldiers and how this might be prevented in the future (22 June 1872), describes the conditions of a number of barracks he has visited (30 May 1872) and discusses general administrative matters.
