DescriptionLetter to Anne (incomplete and undated): he has made preparations for leaving, describes bad storm in area, and mentions visit from a 'Calcutta Cockney' and his wife.

Letter to Anne from Camp Punkabari (13 December 1839): asks her to offer his congratulations to her family on birth of her brother. Discusses difficulties he has had in his duties, opportunities for leave and possibility of going to station at ?Kurnaul. Mentions letter he has received from Emily, discusses scenery, how they have changed in 3 years since they first met, a Mr. Montgomery who is under his command, and local people.

Portion of letter to his mother (undated): discusses his present position and living conditions, his expenses, salary and paying of debts, and reasons for receiving half-salary for acting appointment. He expects to be away by April when he will go to Madras for Anne, before returning to Kurnaul. He is currently in Eastern mountains of Himalaya's: discusses work there.

Letter to Anne (c. May/June 1840): describes bad storm which caused him many problems. He did not expect to still be at Darjeeling: had he not been granted leave he would have applied for furlough to Europe and gone to Madras for 6 months before returning. Hopes to leave Darjeeling by the 20th or 25th. Discusses possible route to Madras (incomplete).
