DescriptionLetter to Anne (incomplete), c. August 1839: discusses his work and condition of his Regiment, possibility of 'Burmese war', and future prospects.

End of letter written to Anne, dated 15 September 1839: discusses his work and building of houses. Mentions suggestion he made to her [possibly that she come and join him] should he not be able to get away on leave. Recounts news from letter he has received from home, inquires after her health, and discusses letter he received from his sister Emily. Also mentions the problems he is facing in his current posting and encloses sketch of the ?Sunderbund. Also discusses local people.

Letter to Anne, dated 25 September 1839: apologises for not enclosing letter from Debude in last letter. He has no hope of obtaining leave at present time: suggests again that she and her parents come and visit him - it would not cost much to extend the house. Discusses future prospects for leave. He has been so busy that he has not had time to send her a map and sketches. Discusses previous bad management and work on survey: 'every step has to be cut through the forest'. Also mentions beautiful scenery and building of 2 hotels and road 'as will enable people to come in here without fatigue', and comment about their work in newspapers. Describes physical appearance. He is to be released of his charge of the Sappers soon and is anxious to hear her thoughts on his proposal about Calcutta.
