DescriptionCollection of correspondence including:

Letter written by R. C. Napier to his mother from Gloucester Coffee House, Oxford Street, London, c. August 1838: he has been detained at the custom house nearly all day, comments that he met Mrs Gile and her daughters at Ostende, and allays her fears about his well-being;

Letter to Anne (c. March 1839): he will be sailing on the 'Prince George' on Saturday, and will be calling to see her father the next day;

Letter to Anne from Madras, c. March 1839: he returns books and drawings which she had given to him; notes that his ship sails this evening, and comments on his distress at leaving her;

Letter from Calcutta (17 March 1839), in which he expresses his sorrow at leaving her, his feelings while departing on board the 'Prince George' and regret that he had not approached her father sooner. Also expresses his fondness for her [continued in MS 1162/3/1/2].
