Description | Letter written by George Barclay, London to his father. Acknowledges letter of 15 November. He had delayed reply until he had news of ship’s departure: it had left for Gravesend and would be boarded on Thursday by the Governor, family and household, including the writer, whom Keith had promised to assist, for voyage to America, destination Philadelphia. Barclay had been acting as tutor to Keith’s son for some months and this may continue. He had had to borrow £4 from George Barclay, brother of James Barclay, ‘sailer in your town’, to buy things necessary for Pennsylvania which he hopes his father will pay. Dispositions respecting Peterhead houses are being forwarded. He sends regards to Charles Gordon in Aberdeen and to his brother David. Mentions rumour that Swedes may invade England and that seamen are being pressed into the Navy. |
