DescriptionLetter (copy) from [Thomas Gordon, Dutch consul at Leith], 15 Queens Row, Chelsea to unnamed correspondent. If estates forfeited in 1715 are given back the family of Gordon of Mesmoir may recover the estate of Becomie, as William, brother of writer’s grandfather, Sir James Gordon, was solicitor general for Scotland under James VII and II, and inherited that estate through his mother ‘Dame Margaret Lermand’. Gives particulars of other members of family and of those persons at present in possession of estate, children of General Scott related to ‘President Dundas’. He asks for advice on, and prospects of, any claim to be made. Discussed memorial he had written on improvement of British fisheries and wish to be Inspector General of Fisheries, Manufactories and Improvements in Scotland. He is uncertain if should leave Dutch service and comments on state of affairs in Holland and disbanding of Scots regiments there. Congratulates correspondent on marriage and his return to Britain from Jamaica.

Note appended with initials C.T.G. regards writer as Thomas Gordon, 5th and youngest son of Alexander Gordon (and Isobel, daughter of Alexander Gordon, merchant in Rotterdam), whose elder brother, Alexander, succeeded to baronetcy of Lesmoir.
