Administrative HistoryJacobus Telones of Zweibrücken, German student studying in England. (The name is the humanist translation of Jakob Zöllner)
DescriptionLetter in Latin from Jacobus Telones, studying at Queen's College, Oxford, to Robert Beale, asking for his help
Abstract:
Had been seriously ill for the previous November and nearly all December, with an illness which nearly proved fatal. Decided on the advice of good friends to obtain a degree before he returned to Germany, as a proof of the support he had received in England and his industry and upright life. A proposal that the degree of Bachelor of Arts be conferred on him was carried, nemine contradicente, on 3rd Februrary, being supported by Dr. Humphrey. The necessary expenses and the cost of his illness had meant that he had spent all the money he had and had had to borrow. Repayment was already overdue. He had hoped to have received his regular payment from the Archbishop of Canterbury and the sum he had regularly added, but Grindal had explained that as he was shortly to leave that office he could not provide the supplement. He owed £3. He had written to the Bishop of Salisbury about this, and expected £1 from him; he had provided £2 and it was seven months since he last had anything. Asks Beale for advice and help.
Note:
In 1583 Grindal’s sight and general health was failing, and arrangements were being made for his resignation. He died on 6 July.
