| Administrative History | René Hennequin (1541 - 1596) seigneur de Sermoises et de Vincey; politician and legal officer (Maître des Requêtes) |
| Description | Letter in Latin, 2 pages in clerk's hand, in reply to a letter from Beale and discussing his lost books Abstract Acknowledges Beale’s kindness to his brother. Glad to hear Beale is engaged in the business of the Privy Council, since that is a certain road to higher things, unless fortune turns human affairs upside down. Beale had written about his loss of books and his desire to replace them. Unfortunately the late Baldwin’s wife also died five months ago and Hennequin does not know who is heir. Beale had regretted the loss of the manuscript of Tilius, a very experienced and reliable French autiquarian. Hennequin has a copy which contains errors, but Tilius’s sons are such jealous custodian of the original that, though they are Hennequin’s connections and friends, they will not make the original available for comparison with his copy. Such is his estimation for Beale that he will have a copy of his own made for him, but asks that he should not make it available to others. Notes (i) The date of the letter must be a slip by Hennequin’s amanuensis, since it beings ‘Your letter of 5 September was a long time getting here and I received it only at the end of October.’ Perhaps 23 November was intended. (ii) The letter is addressed ‘M. Beale, Councillor and Clerk (‘cler’) of the Queen of England’s Council’ [end of abstract and notes by James D. George]
