| Administrative History | René Hennequin (1541 - 1596) seigneur de Sermoises et de Vincey; politician and legal officer (Maître des Requêtes) |
| Description | Leter in Latin in clerk's hand, recalling their earlier friendship and asking Beale to assist Hennequin's brother Abstract: Recalls the friendship which developed between them at Fr. Baldwin’s house [apud Fr. Balduinum], arising from their literary interests. He often recalls Beale’s zealous, burning devotion to subjects which men generally approve and those which advance men to high degree, and his diligence. He still keeps as a memento of Beale a passage from Abbot Lanfranc of Bec which they had extracted into a little book of Hennequin’s on the Eucharist. The letter was brought by Hennequin’s brother; Beale is asked to help him if he needs it. It was written 'raptim & cursim'. A note is added – 'I have no doubt you have obtained some honourable position. If I do not address you by its title, my ignorance will excuse me'. Notes: (i) Fr. Baldwin appears to have provided Beale with accommodation when in France. This apparently is not the same person as it mentioned in MS 1009/2/22 (ii) The letter is addressed to ‘Monsieur Beille’. [abstract and notes by James D. George] Hennequin describes himself as 'Renatus Hennequin, Sarmoesius' in the salutation Dated Lutetia Calendis Augusti 1575 raptim et cursim Signed Tibi addictus & ad ea quae postulamini[?...] Renatus Hennequin Addressed to Monsieur Beille Endorsed by Beale: Monsr Sarmoyse
The 'Fr. Balduinus' referred to is possibly the jurist, thrologian and humanist Franciscus Balduinus, in French François Balduin (1520 - 1573) also Baudouin or Bauduin, who mediated between Catholics and Protestants and had contacts in commmon with Beale |
