| Administrative History | René Hennequin (1541 - 1596) seigneur de Sermoises et de Vincey; politician and legal officer (Maître des Requêtes) |
| Description | Letter in Latin in clerk's hand on current developments in France Abstract: Beale has accepted Hennequin’s offer to have a copy made for him of Tilius’s book; he will put it in hand. Though Beale is concerned about the 15 years of strife in Franc<ae, Hennequin thinks his country’s natural resilience will soon put things right, and that they will be in a strong position again, with agreement on religion over a large part of the country. Notes: (i) The writer is Rene Hennequin, Sieur des Sermoises, Master of Requests, a supporter of the claims of Henry of Navarre to the French throne. (ii) The correct chronological sequences of [the four letters] from Hennequin [in this collection] is MS 1009/2/31, MS 1009/2/32, MS 1009/2/29,MS 1009/2/30. (iii) Tilius appears to be Jean du Tillet, sieur de La Bussière. At the time of these letters his work on French history was only in manuscript. It was published at Rouen in 1577 as ‘Memoires et récherches touchant plusiers choses mémorables poir l'intelligence de l'État et les affaires de France’. A Latin translation was published at Frankfurt in 1579 under the title ‘J. Tilii Commentariorum et disquisitionum de rebus Gallicis libri II’. (See MS 1009/2/53 [which refers to delivery of this book]). Du Tillet died in 1570 (See Biographie Universelle s.n.Tillet (Jean du), Sieur de La Bussiere). [End of abstract and notes by James D. George]
