| Administrative History | David Chytraeus (David Kochhafe) 1530 - 1600, evangelical theologian, student of Martin Luther of Phillip Melanchthon; Professor of Theology at the University of Rostock, Germany Daniel Rogers c. 1536 - 1591, poet and diplomat |
| Description | Letter of introduction for Christianus ad Portum with continuation of Chytraeus's description of affairs in eastern Europe.
The letter was carried by Christianus ad Portum, a doctor of Berne, and was to serve [as a letter of introduction]. Continues the account of Polish affairs given in a previous letter written at Christmas [MS 1009/2/13]. Mentions that Reineccius has acquired William Camden’s 'Brittanica' 'Francofordiae ad Moenam recusam'. [abstract by James D. George]
The contents indicate that this letter, like MS 1009/2/13, was intended for Rogers. Christianus ad Portum or ad Port from Bern was matriculated at Rostock University in 1590. The name is the Latin version used by Christian Amport (c. 1540 - 1590) of Bern, Switzerland, professor of theology at the university there. As he died in March 1590, this is presumably a member of his family, although his son Christian (1574 - 1632) was a clergyman in and around Bern rather than a medical doctor. Reiner Reineck or Reineccius (1541 - 1595) was professor of history at the universities of Frankfurt am Oder and Helmstedt. An edition of Camden's Britannia was printed at Frankfurt am Main in 1590. The main body of the letter describes events in Poland and eastern Europe; Chrytaeus refers to it as a continuation of his 'narration of Polish matters' in his previous letter of Christmas 1590 (MS 1009/2/13)
