Administrative History | The Chancellor - By the Foundation Charter, Bishop Elphinstone reserved the position of chancellor for himself and his successors in the See of Aberdeen. On the abolition of the Episcopacy, and the establishment of the Caroline University (in 1641), the King's College Senatus called a joint meeting with the Prinicipal and Professors of Marischal College in 1643. Nobody from Marischal College attended resulting in the King's College Senatus calling George Marquis of Huntly to be Chancellor. On the restoration of Episcopacy in 1660, the Bishop of Aberdeen resumed his office as Chancellor and this continued to be the case until the abolition of Episcopacy in Scotland. The Earl of Erroll was elected Chancellor in 1770 and from then till the union of the Colleges the position of Chancellor of was elected by the Senatus Academicus or general meeting of the College. |
