Hay graduated MB, CM, with highest honours, from Edinburgh University in 1878 (winning the Ettles prize for most distinguished graduate of the year in medicine). He became assistant to Richard Fraser, Professor of Materia Medica at the University of Edinburgh, in 1878. |
