Hay graduated MB, CM, with highest honours, from Edinburgh University in 1878 (winning the Ettles prize for most distinguished graduate of the year in medicine). He became assistant to Richard Fraser, Professor of Materia Medica at the University of Edinburgh, in 1878.
Description"Sketch of History of Medicine given as introduction to class of Practical Materia Medica, Edin. Univ." (not dated, but Hay was Demonstrator of Materia Medica, Edinburgh University, 1878-83). Signed by Matthew Hay on title page. Bundle of handwritten and annotated notes (74 pages), with list of important works on this subject on final pages.
