DescriptionCase book 'containing a continuation of the Cases with Remarks which occurred in the Cumbrian at Sea…'. The first part of the volume contains weekly remarks and includes comments on the weather conditions, the temperature, the progress made during the voyage and the condition of the patients.

17-23 July (pp.1-3): anchored at St. Helena on morning of 19th, before sailing again on the 21st; until their arrival at St. Helena, the trade winds had blown steadily but not strongly and they had no rain; the sick are in a very favourable state, although there have been some fresh cases of scurvy and fever.

24-30 July (pp.3-6): sick list is still in favourable state; comments on weather and progress during voyage; a typical entry reads: 'Burbridge: Tho' the Acid still fails to affect his gums, he is in many respects better. His general health is greatly improved [,] he has now no pain of head…the tonsils are much cleaner…'; the ship's cook hurt his arm; there have been two cases of rheumatism.

31 July-6 August (pp.6-9): although the sick list is longer notes that the report is even more favourable than the previous week; all the cases are improving; comments on weather conditions and progress during voyage, noting that they 'crossed the line' on the 31st; the total number of sick remaining is now 16.

7-13 August (pp.9-13): 13 remain on the sick list but they were in danger of losing one case, Pearson, from dysentery, and they suspect a highly diseased lung (p.12).

14-20 August (pp.13-15): sick list continues to decrease and Pearson is nearly out of danger; two cases of diarrhea appeared during this week; only 11 remain on the sick list.

21-27 August (pp.15-16): notes that 'we have seldom during the voyage had such a small number of sick as at present, our total being only 11'.

28 August-3 September (pp.17-19): notes that gonorrhea is 'mending'; the total number of cases remains 11.

[From this point onwards the page numbering changes and each double page is numbered as one page. More detailed notes on individual cases are provided, sometimes on the top half of the page, with weekly remarks continuing on the bottom half of the page. The remarks on these cases appear to have been continued from a previous volume.]

4-10 September (p.19 [continues on p.21]): the report is not as favourable as before, the difference due to the change in the weather which has led to rheumatism and pneumonia in existing cases.

11-17 September (p.21) [no details have been entered for this week].

At the end of the volume there is an index of cases.
