Description | Lecture notes of Professor Maxwell taken by Angus Fraser on Natural Philosophy. The first part of the volume, covering pages 1-160, contains notes of lectures on natural philosophy. The second part, from pages 167-272, contains notes of lectures on mathematics. Title page: 'Notes of Lectures on Natural Philosophy delivered by Professor Maxwell to the Tertian Class in Marischal College Aberdeen Session 1856.57 A.F.; A. Fraser 1856'. The start of the volume also contains a list of the members of the Tertian Class. The subject of each lecture is not recorded but the date is provided and a comprehensive index to the contents of the volume is provided on pages 162-164. Diagrams and sketches are included throughout the volume and the questions and answers to examinations are also recorded at various points. Notes are included on the subject of friction (page 33), velocity (p.46), 'Of the Units by which Mechanical forces are measured' (84), Hydrostatics (107), Equilibrium of a fluid (110), liquid bodies (134), latent heat (139), optics (149) and algebraic notation (153).

Begins with notes on logarithms, followed by notes on subjects such as successive differentiation (190), 'Estimation of Errors in Mixed Mathematics' (201), functions (212), and volume (238). The end of the volume contains rough calculations and notes. |
