DescriptionMinutes of the Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society including notices of meetings and agendas, correspondence and circulars. Where talks are referred to below the content of the talk is usually summarised in some detail in the minutes (sometimes a transcript of the talk is enclosed). A summary of the contents is as follows:

1987

Council meeting: 1 October.
Society meeting: 1 October. Obituaries of Dr. John Knox and Professor A. L. Stalker. Talk delivered by Dr. Douglas G. Fowlie, Consultant Psychiatrist: 'Community Psychiatry: Who Cares?'. [A copy of this paper is enclosed.]
Council meeting: 8 October. Questions posed by the President, Dr. Campbell Murray, in circular dated 1 October 1987 [enclosed at start of minutes] were discussed. These were in relation to complaints received about the Society during previous years which he felt shoud be addressed.
Bicentenary Subcommittee meeting: 29 October.
Council meeting: 5 November. Note of meeting with organisers of Student Medical Society with view to strengthening links between it and the Med-Chi Society. Mr. Adam notified the group that he had received a letter from Mr. Colin McLaren, Archivist at the University of Aberdeen, who had recommended microfilming the minutes of the Society, rebinding some of the older volumes, purchasing acid-free boxes to store loose papers and the use of open shelving. Society meeting: 5 November. Obituary of Sir George Middleton.
Copy of oration delivered by Dr. Audrey A. Dawson at Founder's Dinner, 12 December 1987, enclosed.
Council meeting: 3 December.
Society meeting: 3 December. Dr. George P. Milne proposed as Honorary Member.

1988
Council meeting: 14 January.
Correspondence with Paull & Williamsons enclosed relating to Society's tenancy at Foresterhill and terms of lease. Also copy of letter confirming agreement of draft lease between the University and the Society dated 13 January 1975.
Society meeting: 14 January. Dr. William Reith, Regional Adviser in General Practice, introduced subject of 'Learning and Teaching in General Practice'.
Council meeting: 28 January. Further discussion regarding lease of hall and Professor Lockhart's estate. Dr. White read a leeter from Mr. Forbes, Paintings Conservator at the Scottish Museums Council following visit in 1987 who reported that the general condition of all the works viewed on display was very good. Treasurer reported that a projected loss of £2000 in the financial year to April was likely. It was consequently agreed to raise the subscription rate.
Society meeting: 4 February. Mr. Hance Fullerton, General Manager, Grampain Health Board, gave talk: 'Grampian Health Board - Plans and Priorities'. [A copy of this paper is enclosed.]
Bicentenary Subcommittee meeting: 25 February. Includes discussion of potential speakers for McGrigor Lecture and matters relating to the Art Gallery exhibition.
Council meeting: 3 March. The appointment of a Secretary to the Society on the basis of 16 hours per week is recorded.
Society meeting: 3 March. Obituaries of Dr. Findlay Pettigrew and Dr. Logie Samuel Bain. Talks delivered on the common causes of refractive problems and the limitations of conventional refractive aids and the work on adult tonsillectomies.
Bicentenary Subcommittee meeting: 15 March.
Note of buffet supper arranged for new principals in General Practice and newly appointed Consultants in Grampian on the 24 March 1988 with copy of speech delivered at event enclosed.
Society meeting: 7 April. Obituary of Dr. Ian Murray Scott.
Joint meeting of the Council and Bicentenary Sub-Committee: 21 April.
Circular letter, dated 6 May 1988, noting arrangements for converting one of offices to a kitchen and that the issue is being placed on agenda for the Annual Business meeting.
Minute of meeting with members of Aberdeen University Medical Society: 15 May.
Annual Business meeting: 2 June. Obituary of Dr. Hubert Watson Rutherford. Professor John M. Stowers elected President; Dr. Marion White retired as Honorary Secretary. Dr. Murray (outgoing President) gave Presidential Address: 'An Early 19th Century Medical Gallimaufry'. [This address, together with the Annual Report of Council, The Buildings Officer's Report, the Treasurer's Report, the accounts for the year ended 5 April 1988 provided by Williamson & Dunn, Chartered Accountants and the Librarian's Report, is enclosed after the minute. In the latter report, some of the items listed as having been received include acupuncture and cataract instruments brought from China at the time of the Boxer Rising and three wooden stethoscopes, 'one of the original Laennec type'.]
Joint meeting with the Aberdeen University Medical Society in the Auditorium, 15 September. Presentation of Student Electives on the subjects of adolescent psychiatry, cardiac transplantation and the influence of social class and nutritional status on the incident of dental caries in children aged 4-5 years.
Council meeting: 30 September. Details of Professor Lockhart's Bequest provided. Meeting with Medical Society and suggestions for future meetings discussed.
Society meeting: 6 October. Obituaries of Dr. Wynne Parry and Dr. Betty Morgan. Professor Hans Kosterlitz proposed for Honorary Membership.
