1985 Council Meeting - 3 October - Building Officer's Report regarding roof of hall and replacing roof panels with tiles; discussion regarding design of Presidential Medallion; discussion of administration of Naughton Dunn Memorial Trust. Annual Business Meeting - 10 October - Debate took place regarding change of date for ABM from October to June; Reports of Council for year 1984-85 are appended: Report of Council, Marion I. White, Hon. Secretary (notes membership stands at 365); Treasurer's Report, Alasdair B. Matheson (with detailed accounts for year ended 30 June 1985 by Williamson and Dunn, Chartered Accountants); Librarian's Report, A. Adam; Presidential Address, Professor David S. Short (on subject of the Aberdeen Research Ethical Committee). Council Meeting - 7 November - Discussion of Presidential Medallion and arrangements for Annual Dinner. Society Meeting - 7 November - Strachan Bursary presented to Mr. Malcolm Daniel; talk delivered by Professor A. A. Templeton, Regius Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Aberdeen University, in which he reviewed the clinical problem of infertility and recent research on the physiology of reproduction. Bicentenary Committee Meeting - 28 November - Subjects discussed included the golf match, civic reception, the granting of a Royal Charter and patronage of Society by a member of the Royal family and a discussion took place with Dr. G. P. Milne about editing publication on history of Society. Council Meeting - 5 December - Suggestion that an individual be appointed to carry out secretarial work. Society Meeting - 5 December - Talk delivered by Professor W. P. T. James, Director, The Rowett Research Institute on 'The Role of Diet in Public Health'. Society Meeting - 9 January - Obituary of Dr. Frank Bowman; talk delivered by Mr. Kenneth J. Peters with copy of comical poem enclosed. [Copy of circular letters regarding Benevolent Committee and publication for bicentenary celebration enclosed.] Council Meeting - 6 February. Society Meeting - 6 February - Obituary of Colonel A. G. D. Whyte; Professor Edward J. Clegg and staff delivered a talk and a tour: 'Teaching and Research in Anatomy'. Council Meeting - 6 March - Gift of portrait of Dr. F. Bowman. Scoiety Meeting - 6 March - Talk delivered by Miss Mary C. Hartnoll, Director of Social Work, Grampian Regional Council, on 'Health Care and Social Work in the Community'. [Circular letter, dated 30 March, regarding proposed change of date of Annual Business Meeting enclosed.] Council Meeting - 3 April - Secretary, Mrs. D. Bell, appointed to assist Dr. Milne in production of bicentenary publication. Society Meeting - 3 April - Dr. S. J. Urbaniak, Director of the Blood Transfusion Service in Aberdeen, reviewed the history of transfusion from 1667 and work of Aberdeen department, with subsequent tour [see details of this enclosed]. Council Meeting - 1 May. General Meeting - 1 May - Presentation of papers by members of the North-East of Scotland Faculty, Royal College of General Practitioners: Introduction, Dr. D. J. Bell; 'Audit of Care of the Elderly', Dr. M. Milne; 'Fifth Disease - an epidemic', Dr. J. Tuckerman; 'Scoring points from sore throats', Dr. R. Dickie. Council Meeting - 15 May - Discussion regarding use of hall by other groups and possibility of part-time Secretary and opening kitchen due to lack of catering facilities. Also reference to cleaning and repair of chairs and discussion of matters relating to portraits. Copy of circular letter, dated 20 May 1986, written by Geoffrey M. Gill, President, regarding future use of Society's premises and its development as a Postgraduate Medical Centre. He seeks a mandate from the members to explore possibility of extending building to incorporate a small kitchen and dining area. Council Meeting - 5 June. Society Meeting - 5 June - It was agreed to change the date of the Annual Business Meeting/Presidential Address and the laws were accordingly ammended. Professor R. L. Himsworth, Regius Professor of Medicine, delivered a talk entitled 'Quality in Care'. Bicentenary Subcommittee Meeting - 10 June - Various items were discussed including theme of scientific meeting, granting of Royal Charter and Dr. Milne's publication. Council Meeting - 30 September - Agreed to establish subcommittee to discuss future use of hall. The finished Presidential Medallion was shown to the meeting. Reports were presented by the Treasurer, Librarian, Buildings Officer and Secretary. Discussion regarding 250th anniversary of opening of original Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in 1992. 1987 Society Meeting - 8 January - Held at Department of Ophthalmology, ARI. Professor J. V. Forrester discussed 'Developments in Ophthalmology in Grampian' followed by a tour of the department. Council Meeting - 15 January - Further discussion of use of hall and in particular use of hall by the BMA; increase of subscription rate; quote for new granite sign for hall deemed too expensive; agreement that there should be memorial to members killed in Second World War; discussion of salary for potential part-time Secretary; reference to letter regarding portrait of Dr. William Dyce and doubts cast that it was original copy painted by his son. Noted that a portrait of Dyce was offered for sale by Southeby's a few years previously and that name of the Society was on the portrait. It had been offered for sale by an Aberdeen family but was withdrawn when it did not reach the reserve price. Council Meeting - 5 February - Agreed to change venue of Annual Dinner from Station Hotel to Amatola Hotel. Society Meeting - 5 February - Obituary of Mr. Tom Robson; Mr. K. A. Webster, Senior Tutor, Foresterhill College spoke on 'The History of Nursing in Aberdeen'. Council Meeting - 5 March - Agreed to establish memorial to Dr. C. A. Cromar who had been killed in 1943 during World War 2. Society Meeting - 5 March - Obituaries of Dr. D. L. Stewart and Professor R. D. Lockhart. Illustrated talk entitled 'Percutaneous Renal Stone Surgery' delivered by Mr. J. H. Steyn, Consultant Surgeon in the Department of Urology and Dr. J. K. Hussey, Consultant Radiologist. Manuscript note of meeting held with University Buildings Officer on the 2 April to discuss possible areas for expansion to accomodate catering facilities. Council Meeting - 2 April - Details of money bequeathed to Society by Professor Lockhart. Society Meeting - 2 April - Professor F. Walker, Department of Pathology, University of Aberdeen, delivered talk: 'A Fresh Look at Aging Tissues'. Council Meeting - 23 April - Reference to responses received from departmental heads regarding provision of catering facilities and consequent use of the hall; Discussion of legacy from Professor Lockhart; Mrs. F. Irwin, Keeper of Fine Art at the Aberdeen Art Gallery, has confirmed that the portrait of Dyce is an original painted by his son and also comments on portrait offered for sale at Southeby's; Suggestion that minutes should be 'professionally reproduced' and agreed to write to University Archivist regarding this; Information supplied about origins of plane tree outside hall. Bicentenary Subcommittee Meeting - 5 May - Discussion of McGrigor Lecture, bicentenary publication, exhibition in Art Gallery, proposed tie and scarf and other matters. Dunn, Reader in Child Health and Perinatal Medicine, University of Bristol: 'Renaissance of Perinatal Care in the United Kingdom 1500-2000 AD'.
