Description | Minutes of the Aberdeen Medical Society. A list of new laws enacted is recorded at the end of the volume.
The minutes are in the hand of a number of different Secretaries: 29 May-5 June 1804: James Davidson, 12 June-18 December 1804: William Officer, 1 January-11 June 1805: Alexander Ross, 18 June-24 September 1805: George Gordon, 8 October 1805-4 February 1806: Ben Williamson, 11 February-1 July 1806: John Gordon.
The first entry, dated 29 May 1804, notes that after the preliminary business was over, a discourse was read by Mr. Morris on menstruation 'from the Thesaurus', followed by a discourse on cow pox by J. Davidson before Mr. Mitchell's case of hydrothrox was read from one of the case books. In the minute of the 1 July 1806, reference is made to a subscription list for the building of a new hall for the Society.
The later entries follow the same pattern and include a note of the discourses read at each meeting (these are sometimes summarised in some detail). Topics for discussion included: dysentery (12 June 1804), catarrh (13 November 1804), Rheumatism (12 March 1805), Chincough (2 July 1805), Dyspepsia (17 September 1805), Scrophula (11 February 1806), Hernia (1 April 1806) and Inflammation and Carbonic Acid (1 July 1806). |
