| Administrative History | Alexander Deuchar was a seal-engraver in Edinburgh in the first half of the nineteenth century, and had an interest in genealogy. He seems to have undertaken genealogical research on behalf of others. He was the author of British Crests (1817). |

| Description | Genealogical papers of the Grant family, including genealogical notes relating to the Grant family taken from official sources, a bond of cautionary, correspondence relating to the arms of Wyse and the Grant crest and motto, a sketch by Alexander Deuchar of the arms of the Grant family, and a note of printed books used by Deuchar in preparing genealogical information on the Grant family.
The manuscripts consist partly of notes and extracts regarding the family of Grant, collected by him from various sources, and pasted on to sheets made up from pages of old newspapers or discarded legal drafts and accounts, and partly of correspondence and other papers respecting the family received by him from Thomas Boston and others. Copies of Deuchar's replies to letters are drafted on their backs. He had originally numbered pages of various items 1 - 45 in red ink, but pages 3 - 4 now appear to be missing. |
