Administrative HistoryAlexander Bain was the son of a weaver in Aberdeen, born in 1818. He was educated there at Marischal College, graduating with great success in 1840. He tried to secure a teaching post but held radical views and was forced to move to London, where he taught, wrote and carried out social work. He was appointed to the Aberdeen chair of Logic and Rhetoric at the union of the Colleges in 1860, and held it till 1880. A copious writer, he founded the periodical ‘Mind’, which ran from 1876 to 1892, and upheld the view that psychological phenomena were in fact physiological. He died in 1903.
