| Administrative History | Burnett Trust
John Burnett was born in Aberdeen in 1729 and became a merchant like his father. He did not marry and therefore when he died in 1784 he left his fortune (including those from the lands of Kinnadie) to many different causes through The Burnett Trust. Part of the fund was to be acculumulated every 40 years and given to the University of Aberdeen as a prize for essays relating to theology. This was then altered to a lectureship on subjects relating to science, history and theology after a provisional order was granted in 1881. Finally the money was then altered to fund the University of Aberdeen Burnett-Fletcher Chair in History.
