| Description | Letter from David Skene to his father, Andrew Skene, in which he states that he would have liked to have had his father's letter sooner in order to discuss its contents with Dr Smellie but that he will take up the issues with Dr Hunter instead; he does not remember either of the doctors asserting that [Calalura] lactea formed any part of the child's nutrition; he remarks that Smellie's doctrine with regard to natural labours is the same in his book, lectures and practice; he has seen between 20 and 30 labours and in all but one the placenta came away by itself; regarding the muscular structure of the uterus, Hunter never could find a distinct muscle or muscles but a 'heap of muscular fibres running in every possible direction'; he ends his course in three weeks and plans to leave for Paris around 10 - 13 January, he has been researching the best way to travel there; he tells his father that his money has 'run a good deal faster than my calculations' and lists his expenditure, he asks his father to send whatever he thinks he might need until he gets to France; he visits Mr Hardie often and has access to his laboratory; he lists the medicines that he is enquiring about and sending to his father; he discusses their acquaintances, 18 December 1752. |
