DescriptionCopy letters from Lieutenant John Duff, ‘on the river Ganges near Berhampore’ to his brother James, London, the first reporting that he has met their two brothers (Patrick and William), Patrick has been promoted by Lord Cornwallis, he himself is grateful for support and friendship at home, disappointment in the success of these favour in India, the insincerity of Governor McPherson, chains of influence, introducing Major Thomas Scott, 16 May 1787; the second from Calcutta thanking for support, his role as French and native interpreter at courts martial, good health of their cousin Robert Duff, son of the Provost, arrival of Mr Cock from Madeira, clerk recommended by their brother Robert and now working for the General Bank of India, he himself finds the prospects so bad in India and the climate disagreeable and wants to leave, the expenses of living in India are not familiar to those in Europe, asking him to approach Lord Findlater for help, too, 1 September 1787; the third from Calcutta thanking James for all his efforts on John’s behalf, the year’s madeira has arrived and is very bad, 10 September 1787
