DescriptionCopy letter to James Gordon, London, from his brother Alexander, Madeira, acknowledging letters, bills issued at short sight which he regrets but could not help, Ayres Telles are backing in debt owing to the total failure of a crop of wine, rumours that the new crop will be very good, arrival of flour from Philadelphia, wheat from England and Quebec and corn from Virginia, though their stocks now have weevils, sorry that James could not prevent a delivery to a rival house, sorry to hear that James has been distressed by some events but hopes his East India business might succeed, confusion in business caused by drowning of James Anderson in New York, James Searle has been thrown out of his business by his brothers, problems with manufacture of citron, list of bills 26 October 1763; letter from same to same, orders from Captain Drummond of the Greyhound man of war, limited supply of citron, problems with pilchards, the new wine is ‘pretty good, free of Greenness but not strong’, shortage of good wines to give Mr Turner when his ship arrives, beef, butter and mould candles would be acceptable, 10 November 1763
