DescriptionLetter to James Gordon of Letterfourie, London, from James Duff, Lisbon, describing the correspondence he is bringing with him, trouble between the Governor and the Consul and the Factory, Dom Diogo Forjacas will be the new governor, Captain Fielding of the Minerva had objected that the Portuguese forts did not salute the ship, but then H.M.S. Hannibal was fired on, this is entirely the Governor’s action and not Portugal’s, some mention of Smith’s poor management of the company, hoping to explain all when they meet, taking a small cargo of milho, he has brought malmsey for the Duchess of Gordon and chests of citron, and a present of more malmsey for Mrs Gordon, but is not sure how they will be shipped to Scotland, directions for distributing the citron, thoughts of shipping onions to England from Lisbon as presents, the arrogance of Mr Pasley, debating what kind of ship he should take to London, hoping Gordon had a good journey to Scotland, 5 August 1781
