DescriptionCopy letter to James Gordon of Letterfourie, London, from Alexander Gordon & Co., Madeira, regarding possible break up of a business in London involving Mr Haddock, difficulty in shipping to Antigua or Bristol just now, problems with Dr Hawkins’ account, hoping Gordon has a good journey to Scotland, glad the cargo of corn has not arrived from Leghorn as there is too much on the island, the wheat from Danzig should sell better, rumours of peace between Spain and Portugal, still suspicious that the brigantine called the Dairs is going to supply the rebels, 6 July 1777; letter to James Gordon of Letterfourie, London, from Alexander Gordon & Co., Madeira, regarding bills, ship carrying wines to Antigua is well armed, it arrived with wheat from Cork and sails with wine and the Stanqueiro’s son who is touring the islands, North America, Denmark and France, no news on the prospect of the vintage, wheat crop poor, anxious for safe arrival of Danzig wheat cargo, fear of scarcity on the island, much need for American pipes staves, if late ships can come from Hamburg they should bring food, not flax, asking for paper and quills for the counting house, perhaps from Holland, 22 July 1777
