DescriptionLetter to James Gordon of Letterfourie, London, from Daniel Henry Smith, Madeira, regarding correspondence, orders received and fulfilled, old herrings delivered by Peddie, flax is likely to go to the Western Islands, sorry that the plate has not yet been delivered for the Governor, bad year for business and everything has gone wrong, few debts to natives except one who supplies them with wine, sorry to have to draw on London so much, shipping movements, prices for grain, bad weather, problem with two lady visitors obliged to stay with Searle and buy wine from him when they were supposed to stay with them, Dr Kyd is likely to stay with them, though, James Duff’s brother arrived with Lee by whom he was ‘scurvily treated’ and is likely to remain for some months, 21 May 1774
