DescriptionPrivate letter to James Gordon of Letterfourie from Daniel Henry Smith, Funchal, going by their friend Mr Cheap who is carrying letters relating to Smith’s naturalisation, various people leaving Madeira, deceitful practices amongst the merchants, arrangements for money lending, small pox, death of friend Mills, gossip, ‘Ignacio Brown’s nephew Peter was contracted to the lawyer Nicolao Caetano alias Vidrinhas’ daughter but has lost her unluckily other day by the small pox, who her off they say now that he’ll be contracted to the other a child of 8 or 9 years old’, asking for a leather snuff box of the kind they make in Scotland, 22 October 1771
