Description | Minutes of meetings of the North of Scotland & Orkney and Shetland Steam Navigation Company, including copies of correspondence and annual reports to the partners of the Company. Minute of 16 August 1878 refers to a report of the deputation [delegation], who visited the Northern agencies of the Company. Minutes record the Company's takeover of the Pentland Firth route in 1882 and minute of 7 January 1882 notes that a contract with [Hugh] Dunsmuir and [William] Jackson of Govan [engineworks] was to be drawn up for the building [in Glasgow] of a steamer ['St Olaf' - minutes of 22 June 1882] for carrying mail along this newly acquired route. The minutes mention the Company's decision to make arrangements for the new steamer to trade with the port of Stromness. Minutes from 1882 record that meetings were held between the Company and the local railway companies, including the North, British and Caledonian Railway Companies and the Great North of Scotland Railway, to discuss freight and through rates.
