| Description | Five letters from J.J.R. Macleod regarding the possibility of Kosterlitz joining his department in Aberdeen, with grant assistance from the Academic Assistance Council, June 1933 - April 1934:
Letter of 9 June 1933 regretting that he is unable to offer a paid position to Kosterlitz and suggesting that he contact the Academic Assistance Council, which may be able to offer advice on job prospects elsewhere. Notes that he is returning Kosterlitz's certificates to him, but is retaining abstracts and reprints ' which I will have much pleasure in reading, as they deal with subjects in which I am personally interested and to which I am giving close attention.'
Letter of 20 September 1933 expressing his pleasure that Kosterlitz may be able to secure some [financial] assistance from the Academic Assistance Council and confirming that he would be pleased to recommend him for a grant on the grounds that the Council does not commit the University to offering a salaried position when it ends. The letter closes with 'I may add that I am hopeful that it may be possible for you to work with me.'
Letter of 4 October 1933 stating that he has spoken to the University Court and though there are several other appointments for positions, he believes that there should be no difficulty with Kosterlitz's case and encloses the letter of recommendation he requires for the Council. Notes the success of a recent [Council] meeting in London and that a large fund has been subscribed to for assisting research workers.
Letter of 20th November 1933 informing Kosterlitz that Rockerfeller Foundation grant scholarships are allocated annually via the Medical Research Council in June; that the University Senate has granted permission for his matriculation as a voluntary research student in Macleod's department, but that he will not be able to register as a medical student with a view to obtaining a licence to practice as the Medical Faculty is heavily over-subscribed; expressing his sorrow 'at the plight that you and several others who have asked my assistance are placed in' and regretting that he is not able to help.
Letter of 4 April 1934 stating that he has not yet received a cheque on Kosterlitz's account and hoping that this is not embarassing him; hopes that he is collecting an interesting crop of results. |
