DescriptionLetter from Amelia Nyasa Laws, 7 Via Venti Settembre, Rome, to her relatives, regarding visit from Mr. Rae of Naples, who has just returned from England; visits from Mrs. Gibson, Mrs. Campanella, Mr. Irving and Mr. Blake; Mr. Gibson does not like Mr. Blake; he is a little high for Presbyterians; Aunt does not like him either; Mr. Walker and Mr. Irving have rotten teeth from smoking; the officers from Malta fill the Naples manse and smoke all the time; Mary Irving ran away from the Policlinico as she had been made secretary to the matron (a woman of bad character) and that had stopped her from passing her exams; her father was angry at first, then heard the story and was glad to have her safely home; moral looseness is allowed to prevail at the Policlinico; Margaret has gone to New Zealand; Maria and Ernesta working together to prepare for a dinner; Maria's reaction to Fulvio's stockpiling; Miss Jazdowska has accepted the lower rent and is staying on, unfortunately [There were Jazdowskis associated with teaching and art in Aberdeen: James Bronislas Jazdowski, son of John, teacher in Aberdeen, graduated from Marischal College in 1856 and according to an annotation of the Search Room student list died in Rome in 1902]; there is another proposal to open the Anglo-American home to provide extra beds for wounded soldiers, although they are not yet needed; Mrs. Brock has written to Mr. Parr, secretary at the embassy, offering her services as housekeeper at the Home; thanks for letters.
