DescriptionLetter from Maggie Gray, Mrs. Burrell's, 60, High Street, Galashiels, to Robert Laws, regarding writing letters; visit to Miss Milne's; hearing tales of Galashiels in the 1840s; some snow and bitter cold; Miss Scott's visit to Glasgow; cutting short her lesson to attend prayer meeting; intending to attend Annual Social Meeting; walk along Abbotsford road with Miss Milne to discuss school without being overheard; poor gaslight in her lodgings for needlework; social evening in Mr. Blair's West U.P. Church, with public hall filled to the door; preaching by Dr. Seddon of London, a great original; teaching singing from a Scots songbook; keeps the pupils warm; pupils intrigued to see music written so she must improve her own knowledge to keep ahead; working from Hamilton's Patent Notation; reading a story during sewing to keep down talking; trying to collect the fees while teaching singing - in confusion missed some money; praising pupils to Mary; the new clock has stopped; thanking him for letter with his father's enclosed; shock to his parents apparently from some incident at nearby Garvie's premises, perhaps a fire; trouble writing letters.
