DescriptionThe diary runs from 27 April to 26 July 1925
The account begins with th assembly of the party in Britain and preparations, arranging visas etc., then by rail via Vienna and Belgrade to Adrianople/Edirne and on to Constantinople/Istanbul. Calder takes photographs at Bostancik, incuding a XPHCIANOI stone reported by Cox. Arrives in Angora/Ankara 9th May, and is joined by Lindsay, Law and Cox. Discussions with Turkish authorities; on the 15th, leaves for Konya, where the expedition proper begins. From his base in Konya and camps in the vicinity Calder visits sites in the area and also records conversations with villagers, including a note (26th May) of a "long discussion with husband of 4 wives and father of 21 children on relative merits of polygamy and monogamy"; also comments on village customs (including methods of ensuring conception), religious practices etc. On 21 June goes to Kadyn Khan and inspects sites in the area including Duragan; visits early graveyards and other memorial locations. Returns via Bylgaria and Austria.
