Administrative HistoryJames Durno, of Uppermill, Tarves, Aberdeenshire, breeder and judge of shorthorn cattle, was for 37 years Director, several times President and finally Honorary Secretary, of the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland. His family farmed in Aberdeenshire and he maintained close links with the University through collaboration with its Agricultural Department and the foundation of several prizes in the Faculties of Science and Medicine. In recognition of this work, he was awarded the Honorary Degree of LL.D by the University of Aberdeen in July 1961.

Lockhart made frequent use of his cattle pedigrees in his own teaching and lectures.
