Administrative History | Mother and Baby Home sought to keep young, unmarried mothers and their children together, and to prevent further unwanted pregnancies. |
Description | Address to the annual meeting of Mother and Baby Home, entitled 'Then and Now', 30 November 1964. Looks at the changes occurring in society since the group was established, in particular, sexual morality and greater acceptability of promiscuity amongst both men and women. This has led to a growing number of teenage pregnancies and 'shot-gun' marriages, but the incidence of divorce amongst this group is higher than that of couples who marry later and conceive their first child after marriage.
Two copies: one hand written, one typescript.
Mary Esslemont was a member of a special committee of the British Medical Association which looked at the relationship between women's emancipation and increased promiscuity. She wrote and lectured frequently in this general subject area. |
