Administrative HistoryFrank Raymond Leavis was born in Cambridge in 1895. He served in the ambulance unit during the Great War and afterwards went to study for his degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He graduated in English and became a probationary lecturer, marrying one of his students, Queenie Roth, in 1929. Together he and his wife founded 'Scrutiny' in 1932, a very influential literary periodical which decisively fashioned the teaching of literary criticism in the universities. His best-known work is a collection of essays from Scrutiny: 'The Common Pursuit', published in 1952.
