DescriptionThis file contains a number of visual observation reports from meteorological offices, observatories and homes, and also observations from aircraft based at and on routes to and from London, Glasgow, Ireland and Iceland. Observations are chiefly made from England (including Norfolk, Coventry, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Cornwall), but also Scotland, Northern Ireland , Germany and Iceland. There are letters addressed to James Paton detailing observations of aurorae, and a folder of reports completed by marine and aircraft observers spanning the period between December 1st 1952 to December 1953. In addition, this file contains a summary of observations made at the St. Andrew's University Observatory and Mills Observatory at Dundee between 1950 and 1953.

- January data includes a map showing positions of aurora survey observers in 1953 and 1954.
- The March folder contains a diagram of constellations annotated with aurora sighting reports.
-The September folder includes an 'International Aeradio Limited North Atlantic- Northern Section' map and a large number of completed aircraft worksheets.
- The folder of marine and aircraft reports includes aircraft reports from RAF Binbrook, Lincolnshire and marine reports from Manchester, London, and the Ocean Weather Service, amongst others. Also in the folder is a calendar with strokes against days which indicate when and how many reports were received from BOAC transatlantic flights.
ArrangementThe year is divided chronologically into 2 boxes: January to August in box 1, September to December in box 2. There is also one folder of marine and aircraft reports spanning the year which have been kept together in original order and included in box 2. The summary of observations made at St. Andrew's University Observatory and Mills Observatory between 1950 and 1953 is placed in box 1.
