| Administrative History | Bernard ('Barney') Small (1900?-1982), post office worker and soldier. He was brought up in the east end of Aberdeen, he was the eleventh of thirteen children. His father was John Whiton Small, scenic painter at His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen, who had several paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy. After leaving school at fourteen he started work as a telegraph boy before becoming a postman (working in Kemnay for 2 years around 1921) and then a clerical officer. He was a member of the Union of Post Office Workers and regularly contributed articles and letters to local newspapers. He was called up for service in 1942 and later studied economics at Ruskin College, Oxford. |
