His diary entries for this period are interspersed with French verse He described weather trends in France He was waiting to hear from acquaintances in Dominica He talked about choosing a wife He described medical cases he encountered as a doctor He made notes from 'An Introduction to Natural Philosophy' by William Nicholson (2nd edition in 2 volumes, London 1787) with diagrams including notes on the working of the eyes and lenses He made notes about an unconcealed hernia he suffered He listed people he called to see He worried about money and was searching for work and patronage throughout August. He remarked that Dr Stewart, doctor at Cromar, Aberdeenshire, was addicted to drinking and wondered about practising in Cromar. He described his attempts to fund his plans which included selling his watch and transcribing letters he sent requesting loans. He decided to practice at Cromar for a while as a trial He made notes on astronomy He treated boy with a hook in his hand He described his own sudden bowel pains He read Dr Lowth's 'Lectures on Sacred Poetry by Gregory' (2 Vol 1787) and makes notes from it He told of the death of the young laird of Rubislaw at Inverness He described social pursuits including horse racing and the players He mentioned his membership of professional societies He gave recipes for remedies and describes medical procedures carried out He made notes from Porney's French Grammar Pencil sketch of bold white rocks |
