Administrative HistoryEdward Dilly [1732-1779]. He and his brother Charles were booksellers in The Poultry, London. The brothers were the London publishers of the Essay on Truth and The Minstrel

Samuel Johnson [1709-1784] Beattie first met Johnson in London during Beattie's 1771 visit, having been introduced by James Boswell. Johnson admired both Essay on Truth and The Minstrel, and spoke affectionately of Beattie. Beattie always saw Johnson on his visits to London, and greatly admired him, though he was critical of some of the comments in A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland

DescriptionEssay on Truth has been favourably received and sold well for time of year - more than 100 copies. Monthly Review has praised it highly. Dilly has delivered copies to Samuel Johnson and Alex Fordyce. If Beattie treats with Kincaid and Bell for future edition of Essay, Dilly will be glad to be concerned. Understands present edition is in Beattie's own account
