| Administrative History | Malcolm Hay of Seaton (1881 - 1962) had a varied career as an army officer, historian and author. In World War One he was also Director of M.I.1b., the Cryptology Department of the War Office. He became a distinguished local scholar and historian after his early wartime experiences. His fresh approach to many controversial points of Scottish history and the role of the Catholic Church had a widespread influence. In later life he became involved in the Zionist cause, and wrote extensively on the historical problems of the Jews in Europe.

This original arrangement has not been altered, although some items were added to it at a later date. There is considerable overlapping between the different series, which represent only a rough subject division. |

There is some duplication between the two collections.
Family and estate papers of the Forbes and Hay families of Seaton, 1746 - 1886 (MS 2253). Malcolm Vivian Hay was the last laird of Seaton, the estate having passed to his family in the nineteenth century, through the marriage of Elizabeth Forbes to Lord James Hay (1788 - 1862).
Accounts of the Forbes and Hay families of Seaton, 1782 - 1861 (MS 2414). This collection complements the deposit of family and estate papers of the Forbes and Hay families of Seaton in MS 2253 (above). In particular, it fills in gaps in the series of accounts contained therein. |
