Description[in inventories 289/17 and 296/64 date is given as 3 Feb and 27 Feb. respectively].
Extract by James Primrose, clerk, from books of proceedings of Privy Seal, at Edinburgh on above date anent decreet following on letters used at the instance of Andrew ,lord Fraser. The crown had granted to his father, the late Andrew Fraser, the honour of a baron & lord of parliament with arms and cognisance in accordance with this rank, which he had enjoyed yntil his decease and none set up by him had been questioned until now when dykes of kirkyard at Rathen were to be repaired. Dispute had arisen as to by whom the kirk style was to be repaired - formerly seen to by the late Lord Lovat and Lord Fraser - after Lovat's death Fraser had been requested to undertake the work on his own & therefore he had caused his arms and name to be placed above the style. After the laird of Phillorth died, his son, Alex. fraser and others, "completely boddin in feare of warre", came by night and erected three large boards bearing Phillorth's arms above the style covering Fraser's even though P. is not a parishioner etc., the only purpose being to annoy Fraser etc.. On hearing both parties found that boards had been erected for Phillorth's funeral only [? as a hatchment] and son was instructed to take them down by 15 March 1637 in presence of minister or moderator of presbytery.
Old fers. (17), others too obscured to decipher.
