Creator NameNational Association of Theatrical and Kine Employees (Aberdeen branch) (fl 1938 - 1960)
Administrative HistoryThe Association of Theatrical and Music Hall Operatives was formed in 1890, changing its name to the National Association of Theatrical Employees in 1900. By 1930 membership had been extended to employees in cinemas and film studios, and it became known as the National Association of Theatrical and Kine Employees. It is now called the National Association of Theatrical, Television and Kine Employees.

An Aberdeen branch of the Association was established by 1938, though its recognition by the Cinema Exhibitors Association was not obtained without a struggle. The Union's early efforts for recognition and improved working conditions were strongly supported by Aberdeen Trades Council, and resulted in a ground-breaking agreement between Aberdeen cinema workers and their employers, which provided a blueprint for similar developments in other Scottish towns and cities.

Further information about the development of the trade union movement and the history of individual trade unions in Aberdeen can be found in William Diack, History of the Trades Council and the Trade Union Movement in Aberdeen (Aberdeen: Aberdeen Trades Council, 1939), and in Kenneth D. Buckley, Trade Unionism in Aberdeen 1870 - 1900 (Edinburgh and London: Oliver and Boyd, 1955). Arthur Marsh and Victoria Ryan Historical Directory of Trade Unions , 4 vols (Aldershot: Gower, 1980 - 1984) also contains useful information about the development of individual unions, at both the national and local level. Summarised details from each of these sources has been used in compiling this collection level description.
